Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
This is a talking therapy that is the recommended first line of treatment for mild, moderate and some severe experiences of depression and anxiety disorders.
A goal-focused talking therapy
Commonly referred to as just CBT, this is an intervention that relies greatly on a healthy therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist, as this helps us work as a team to manage challenging, distressing thoughts and feelings that may be part of the presenting problem. This intervention is very much goal-focused, so it is important for the patient to be clear on what they would like to achieve, so we can develop an ideal treatment plan.
However, we appreciate that at times an experience of depression or anxiety can be so overwhelming that it affects decision -making and the confidence to express our goals. We can talk about this and share ideas to help make it easier to set targets and simple, realistic goals that could be achieved within the CBT framework.
A Structured Approach
CBT offers a structured approach to mental health treatment, with emphasis on healthy communication, honesty, respect, adherence to an agreed plan, using disorder-specific models, worksheets, and exercises to help with learning of helpful strategies and development of balanced perspectives.
Understandably, this can be a challenging process, and it is normal to notice initial increase in anxiety and awareness emotions and negative thoughts in the process of change. We use various approaches to manage these, and it is important that sessions are attended regularly to facilitate emotional regulation, tolerance of distress and overall learning of basic coping strategies.
Reviewing Progress
In CBT we use a questioning style that aims to encourage reflection and accessing of alternative perspectives, and this helps to encourage implementation of healthier behaviours to facilitate change, maintain progress, and recovery. We regularly review progress, and where necessary will use questionnaires to clarify suitability of our interventions for your needs. These can be important tools for helping us decide whether it is still appropriate, necessary to continue with therapy and how ready the patient is for discharge.
CBT is a short-to-medium term intervention and is designed to help patients assume responsibility for the change process very early on, through the identification of clear goals, clarification of readiness to engage in therapy, and the use of agreed out-of-session tasks.
